Totally.
Oh, someone else also asked this, so the reason for my immediate horror was not because “innocent victims” doesn’t get tossed around or because I think it’s a tautology per se but because it was used in a context where the shooter was taken alive? As in he didn’t kill himself and wasn’t killed by the police (hence “guilty victim” or just “victim”), so the phrasing hit me as odd. It was also followed by “no words can fill the hole left by the death of an innocent,” which, it seems inappropriate to invoke that kind of unspoken binary of innocent=everyone grieves, guilty=no one grieves in a situation where everyone killed was obviously innocent. Add to this that the conversation that’s come about in the aftermath of the shooting has centered around how heated rhetoric has stirred something in people that’s more than a little dangerous and you’d think Sarah Palin, who has been a major figure in that conversation, would be careful about what she says. But I mean, I’m not a Palin fan so I can fully admit there’s bias at work, too.
Makes sense. Thank you for explaining. She should absolutely be careful about what she says, the way she says it, and the context in which she says it. I appreciate that you admit the bias too. I wasn’t pointing it out to be rude, just to say that we all need to keep calm about what she does, because the more uppity we get, the more she laughs and points and pats herself on the back.
Anyway, uppity or not, I think the bottom line is that we all wish she would just go. the. fuck. away. I mean. Really.
