I absolutely love when Jessa sneaks into our closet and steals socks out of the laundry basket. She grabs it ever so stealthily and then runs like the wind down the hall. She runs like it’s the greatest score she’s ever made. It is truly adorable.

Tonight, I went to the roast of one of of my old coworkers. He is the right-hand man to the artistic director of the dance company for which I worked. He planned schedules, coordinated the dancers, ran many a rehearsal, set pieces, choreographed pieces and provided a lot of comic relief to the dancers and staff alike. He was there for 10 years and is now moving to the Netherlands to join Nederlands Dans Theater. He’ll be amazing and they’re lucky to have him.

The roast itself was hilarious and touching, and there was no shortage of tears by the end. His departure represents yet one more “old timer” moving on. Now, I wasn’t really an old timer having only been there for three years at the time that I was laid off, but I think I was there long enough to witness the end of an important era. Within those three years, the long-time executive director (only the company’s second in its 30+ year history…she was there for 23 years) left, its star dancer retired after 11 years, as did several dancers who had been around during the tenure of the founder of the company. The history was slowly disappearing. In its place was a different energy. Still amazing, but…different. Colder. Less of a family.

I was in the marketing department and we, too, were a special team. I’ve never met anyone who cared more about what they were marketing than we did. We loved it, truly and deeply. I’ve never loved a job as much as I loved this one. I believed very much in what I was touting. I adored watching these dancers work so hard day in and day out. I felt like I was a part of something really unique and amazing. That all changed, of course, and things became a bit more corporate. It was pretty clear that “well this is how we’ve always done it…” was not going to fly. History was old. The future was new. Things were going to change. I think I was one of the first to go.

Luckily, I coincidentally had the interview for my current job on the very same day that I was laid off, creating the most seamless transition in my entire life. Left the company a month to the day before my wedding, had an interview the same day, got the job offer the day before my wedding, got married, went on my honeymoon, started my new job. This job, in many ways, is infinitely better. Better pay, better hours, better benefits, better security. I walk in at 9 and leave at 5. No working crazy hours. No two-week performance runs spending each night at the theater (with no overtime pay). But I’ll tell ya…being around my old friends tonight, around the dancers and their energy, seeing the photographs and videos and hearing the stories regaled, I realized how much I fucking miss that place.

I’m still a little bitter about the way my departure went down…I was getting ready to say my goodbyes but I never expected it to be that sudden…but mostly, I just miss the passion it brought out in me. I miss being inspired by the dancers and their art. I miss my relationships with them and with the rest of my coworkers. I miss really loving what I did for a living. The dancers gave me such warm welcomes tonight that it made me feel as though they missed me as well. And that felt good…

It was a special time, indeed.

You know what? I know people get tempted. I know that it’s a weird thought to think you’re going to be with one person for the rest of your life. But if you have a problem with that, THEN DON’T MOTHER-LOVIN’ GET MARRIED!

Cuz here’s what. It’s NOT hard to have respect for someone and treat them as such. And if you marry someone you claim to love and respect, then goddamn it, take a cold shower and keep it in your pants! And if you fall out of love with that person, then still respect him or her and end the relationship.

Enough with this cheating. Enough with humiliating the mother/father of your children. Enough with thinking you’re so badass you can get away with anything. You CAN’T. Especially when you’re banging cheap people who can’t wait to open their mouths about it.

And those who contribute to the cheating? Shame on you. Shame. On. You.

That’s all I have to say on that.
